An event not to-be-missed i.e. KOMTAR Tower Run 2010 will be held on June 5, 2010 (Saturday) from 7.00am to 11.30am at KOMTAR Tower, Georgetown.

KOMTAR Tower Run 2010 is organized by KOMTAR Revitalisation Committee partnering with Raintree Empire Sdn Bhd (Company No. 783533-H) where participants have to take on the physical and mental challenge to run up the entire 60-storey KOMTAR Tower, Penang’s tallest building and an icon of Penang in its heydays.

Councils told to inspire others in Cleaner Greener Penang campaign

EVERY department in the state’s two local councils must map out a strategy to enhance the ‘Cleaner Greener Penang’ initiative.

The Penang government does not agree with a Penang Island Municipal Council (MPPP) plan to “recycle” burial lots in non-Muslim cemeteries to overcome the shortage of space.

Penang local government committee chairman Chow Kon Yeow said today the idea to exhume the remains of deceased individuals after a period of time needed to be reconsidered as it was a sensitive matter.

Teen held over rape attempt

A 15-year-old boy was caught and beaten up by a security guard after he and an accomplice tried to rape a 28-year-old woman in a public toilet at the Komtar bus terminal here.

The woman, who works with an express bus company, had earlier gone to the first-floor toilet at around 9.15pm on Saturday when the two rushed in and threatened her with a knife.

Penang may refuse waste service plan

Penang may become the first peninsula state to opt out of the national privatisation of solid waste collection and disposal services as it feels its two municipal councils can perform a better job.

State Local Government and Traffic Management Committee chairman Chow Kon Yeow said the state government was not convinced of the ability of a third party to undertake the job effectively.

He said a final decision would be made after the completion of a study by the Social Economic and Environmental Research Institute and the state Local Government division which was expected to be completed next month.

Penang councillors to get higher allowances

enang municipal councillors will be paid more from this year.

State Local Government and Traffic Management Committee chairman Chow Kon Yeow said both the monthly and meeting allowances had been raised to ensure active participation from the councillors.

He said the monthly allowance was raised from RM600 to RM700, and the meeting allowance from RM50 to RM60 for a maximum of 10 meetings.

Report lodged against Broadcasting DG

The Penang government lodged a police report on Tuesday against the Director-General of Broadcasting Datuk Ibrahim Yahya for allegedly posting a libellous article in his blog recently.

The report, based on an article entitled ‘Somebody Wants to Jail Me’ in Ibrahim’s blog http://duniatiger.blogspot.com on Saturday, was lodged by Ng Wei Aik, the political secretary to the chief minister.

Think twice before ignoring summonses, Penangites told

Those thinking of ignoring the local councils’ summonses better think twice, warned state Local Government and Traffic Management Committee chairman Chow Kon Yeow.

“The public should not think that the decision by the court in Temerloh on mini-market owner Subramaniam Gopal means everybody can throw away their summonses.

“The local councils in the state fully complied with the legal provisions under the Federal Constitution and the various Acts when issuing the summonses,” he told a press conference at his office in Komtar yesterday.

Pre-war houses to be demolishsed

The Penang Development Corporation (PDC) has appointed a contractor to demolish run-down pre-war houses that are lying vacant along Maxwell Road, posing a safety threat to the public.

Komtar assemblyman Ng Wei Aik said today the move is necessary as many of the terrace houses had fallen into bad physical condition and are beyond repair.

He stressed however that the contractor has been instructed that vacant lots next to occupied ones should not be demolished.

Integrate services at Weld Quay

The Weld Quay terminal, a notable landmark and gateway to Penang Island, should be redeveloped into a public transportation hub with the ferry, port and other transportation services integrated into one.

Local Government, Traffic Management and Environment Committee chairman Chow Kon Yeow said the terminal had the potential of being transformed into the island’s main transportation hub with the future LRT or inter-city bus services integrated into it as well.

Responding to a statement by Penang Port Sdn Bhd’s (PPSB) managing director and CEO Datuk Ahmad Ibnihajar who said that PPSB would segregate its ferry services into a wholly-owned subsidiary by Thursday, he said: “The Finance Ministry should look at the ferry terminal in its re-development plan. The terminal, which is supposed to provide a welcoming ambience for tourists, looks run-down.

Redevelop Weld Quay, federal govt told

The state has called on the federal government to redevelop Weld Quay into a multi-modal transport hub.

Local Government and Traffic Management Committee chairman Chow Kon Yeow said the Finance Ministry should transform the Weld Quay ferry terminal into a public transportation hub where there would be integration of the ferry service, water taxi, bus, and future light rail transit (LRT) or aerobus services.

“Weld Quay is a gateway to Penang island and a face lift is long overdue,” he said in a statement on Friday. The Finance Ministry should be looking more that just segregating the Penang ferry service from the port operations undertaken by Penang Port Sdn Bhd (PPSB).”

Money for Unesco site with Khazanah

GEORGE TOWN: A federal allocation promised to Penang after its successful listing as a Unesco World Heritage Site has been given to Khazanah Nasional. “Ideally, the money should have been channelled to us because we are the custodians of the state,” Local Government, Traffic Management and Environment Committee chairman Chow Kon Yeow said.

He said Second Finance Minister Tan Sri Nor Mohamed Nor Yakcop had told him and Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng on Thursday that the money had been given to Khazanah, a Federal Government investment arm.

“Since the money has already been given to Khazanah, I hope the Federal Government will consider giving the state government RM25mil for our conservation projects,” he said, adding that Khazanah should involve the state in its plans to utilise the allocation.
