Victory dinner to raise funds for DAP building

To mark the March 8 general election results and raise funds for the party’s new headquarters, the Penang DAP will hold a victory dinner at the Han Chiang High School field at 8pm on Nov 28 in Penang.Dubbed ‘Malam Kemenangan Rakyat Pulau Pinang’ (Night of the Penang People’s Victory), the event aims to raise RM500,000, Penang DAP chairman Chow Kon Yeow, who is also the event organising chairman, told reporters at a press conference.

“Since the election results were announced and the party formed the state government, we have not had a celebration.

“This event is also held to raise funds for our new headquarters which is expected to cost about RM3mil,” he said.

He said the state DAP needed a four-storey building to house its administrative staff and hold meetings.

“Our current headquarters on Jalan Talipon is too small because we now have about 80 party branches in the state.

“Before March 8, we only had 40 branches so now we need a bigger space for party activities.

“We have not decided on the location but have identified several possible buildings for the new headquarters. We will be organising more events to raise money for our building fund,” he said.

Chow said the party was attempting to break its own record for organising the state’s largest dinner gathering.

“In 1989, we organised a dinner to celebrate the freeing of ISA detainees Lim Kit Siang and (his son) Guan Eng. We sold 865 tables. This time, we are targeting 1,000 tables. We hope all DAP supporters will come to make the event a success,” he said.

The tickets priced at RM5,000, RM1,000 and RM300 (per table), are available at the party headquarters and all DAP service centres.

Opposition Leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim will attend the dinner.
