GEORGE TOWN (July 11, 2010): The Penang government will enforce its polystyrene ban among hawker stalls owners here from next year onwards to reduce the usage of polystyrene packaging in the state.
State Local Council committee chairman Chow Kon Yeow said the Penang Island Municipal Council (MPPP) and the Seberang Perai Municipal Council (MPSP) would incorporate the condition as one of the clause in the license renewal process.
“From next month onwards, the state authorities would take the initiative to educate and bring awareness to the hawker stall operators on this,” he said.
Chow added that license of hawkers who refused to comply will revoked as a last resort in this initiative, which is part of the state government’s Cleaner, Greener Penang programme.
“But the enforcement action will only take place from Jan 1, 2011 onwards,” he said at the launch of the Recycling Carnival at Sunshine Farlim today.
Among the programmes held during the carnival included the Green Eco Bag design competition, computer recycling programme, E-waste recycling programme, handphone recycling programme and exhibitions.
